Sunnidale Park in fall: a shorter Barrie walk with children or older relatives
Sunnidale Park combines autumn trees with an inclusive playground and a year-round washroom. For a shorter family outing, start from an open Sunnidale Road access and turn back when needed. The Coulter Street lot and a trail section have a current work notice.

Why this park fits a mixed-age trip
Sunnidale makes sense when the outing needs to work for children, a grandparent and someone who mainly wants to see the trees. Choose a small walk with room to stop, rather than a distance everyone must finish.
A visitor asked Barrie Reddit in October 2025 for fall walks suitable for two children and a senior. Sunnidale stood out for open views, different trees and a playground. That is useful guidance for choosing a type of outing, rather than proof that every path suits every visitor.
Keep the walk small. Let the person who needs the shortest trip set the pace. A park visit can be a tree walk and a short play stop without becoming a long hike.
The nice thing about this choice is that nobody has to win a hiking contest. One person can enjoy the tree shapes while a child looks forward to the playground. In a June 2025 stroller discussion, several readers also liked Sunnidale’s gravel paths and described doing laps there. That supports the idea of a flexible park outing, but a stroller recommendation is not a measured access survey.

Use the current entrance notice
The City says emergency stormwater work closed the Coulter Street parking lot and park trail from October 5 for about two weeks. It still directs visitors to access the trail network from Sunnidale Road. An estimated two-week job is not a promise that the lot has reopened. Follow the current signs.
The park address is 265 Sunnidale Road. A map pin helps find the park, but it does not show a step-free route through a work area. Check the route that the person in your group can actually use.
It is worth separating the park’s open spaces from its woodland paths. A May 2025 conversation showed why: one visitor said paths were open, another had seen closure signs, and a third thought the signs had simply been forgotten. A reply warned about branches caught overhead. Those old reports do not settle today’s access. The October work notice and the signs at the actual entrance matter more.
Plan around the autumn washroom hours
The externally accessible washroom at Dorian Parker Centre runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. between Thanksgiving and April 30. Thanksgiving has already passed. Do not plan around the longer summer hours.
The inclusive playground has ramped access and features for several access needs. That does not mean all woodland trails are paved or suitable for wheels. Wet leaves and softer ground can change the outing. Choose an open route and turn around early if footing is poor.
For a small autumn plan, choose one main thing: the inclusive playground, an arboretum stroll or the online tree walk. You can add a second thing if everyone is still comfortable. Taking a photograph of an interesting leaf is an easy stopping point. It gives children something to notice without asking an older relative to keep up with a long, fixed route.
Think about the return trip while the group still feels fresh. A person may manage a gentle outward walk and find the same distance tiring on the way back. After Thanksgiving the washroom closes at 5 p.m., so a late-afternoon start leaves less room for a leisurely stop. A short visit with a clear return point can be more enjoyable than trying to use every feature in one day.
