Resident entry and opening days
Who can use the Barrie landfill?
The landfill is for Barrie residents. Staff require photo identification at entry and can refuse entry without it. Keep ID ready before approaching the scalehouse. This resident restriction also applies to the city’s free electronics drop-off.

When is the main waste depot open?
The Waste and Recycling Depot opens Tuesday to Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It is at the top of the hill beyond the scalehouse. Holiday closures still apply, so an ordinary Tuesday-to-Saturday calendar is not enough around public holidays.

Can I take paint and household hazardous waste on a weekday?
The household hazardous waste facility opens Saturdays only, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It is past the scalehouse at the top of the hill. During the lower recycling depot’s operating season, hazardous waste is also accepted there on Saturdays only.

Sort materials and choose the right depot
Where is the seasonal recycling depot?
Use the lower gate at 272 Ferndale Drive North. The city generally opens this depot from April to late November, Tuesday to Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Actual opening and closing dates depend on snow melt and snowfall.

What can I drop off at the lower depot?
Its no-disposal-fee materials include tires, organics, cardboard, blue and grey box recyclables, scrap metal, textiles, electronics, broken recycling or organics bins and light bulbs. Residential yard waste is limited to four bags there. Batteries are accepted throughout its open hours.

What are the yard-waste limits at the main landfill?
The first 100 kilograms of each residential leaf-and-yard-waste load is free. Weight above that is charged at $60 per tonne. Remove plastic bags. Branches thicker than four inches are charged at the normal waste rate. Commercial loads use different minimum-charge rules.

Special loads, purchases and holiday planning
Can I bring soil, sod or insulation?
Clean fill and topsoil are not accepted. Sod is accepted only after its soil is removed. All insulation must be bagged. These rules concern distinct material types; do not assume that an accepted garden-waste load makes excavated soil acceptable too.

Does the landfill take asbestos?
No. The city directs residents to a company licensed to handle asbestos. Do not mix it into another landfill load. Appliances containing refrigerants also have a separate disposal process, linked from the landfill page, rather than ordinary electronics disposal.

Can I buy compost or mulch?
The page currently lists finished compost and mulch for sale. Residential loads up to 300 kilograms cost $5; loads of 310 kilograms to 1.5 tonnes cost $10. Bring your own shovel and containers. If also disposing of waste, tell the scalehouse because two weigh-ins and weigh-outs are needed.

Which holidays and payment methods should I plan for?
The site closes on Christmas, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Canada Day and September 30. It closes at noon on December 24 and 31. The landfill accepts cash, debit, Visa, Mastercard and American Express. Check the linked rate sheet for your disposal materials.
