Start the application and prepare identification

How do I start a Barrie marriage licence application?

Complete the online application through the ServiceOntario link on Barrie’s page. After submitting, use ServiceOntario to book the appointment with Service Barrie that finalizes the licence. An online application alone is not the issued licence.

What is the licence fee?

Barrie lists a $145 fee, paid at the appointment by cash, debit or credit. This is the licence fee, not an officiant or ceremony package. The licence becomes void after its validity period and the city says the fee is non-refundable.

What identification must each applicant bring?

Each person needs two original government-issued identification documents, with a photograph on at least one. Examples include a passport, driver’s licence, Ontario Photo Card, birth certificate, citizenship document or permanent resident card. Match any changed name with the appropriate original change-of-name record.

Attendance, divorce documents and timing

Can I use a health card, photocopy or phone picture?

No. Barrie specifically excludes health cards and does not accept copies or photos of identification. Bring the originals even if you uploaded information during the online application. Missing original evidence can prevent staff from completing the appointment.

Must both applicants attend the appointment?

A licence can be issued when only one applicant attends, provided that person brings the absent applicant’s original identification as well. Prepare the required documents for both people. This exception changes who attends, not the evidence required for each applicant.

What must I bring after a divorce in Canada?

Bring the Divorce Certificate, not the Divorce Order. The city checks for CERTIFICATE on the document and cannot proceed without it. If you do not have the certificate, request it from the courthouse that finalized the divorce before your appointment.

Ceremony arrangements and certificates

What happens after a divorce outside Canada?

Ontario must validate the specific documents showing you are no longer married. Barrie says processing can take up to four weeks. Use the linked ServiceOntario process or call 416-325-3408 before relying on an appointment date. The city does not replace that provincial validation.

How long is the issued licence valid?

It is valid for three months from its issue date. After that it is void and the fee is not refunded. Plan the licence appointment around the actual ceremony date, not merely when you begin online paperwork.

Does the city provide the ceremony or officiant?

Barrie’s City Clerk does not perform marriage ceremonies. You can book the City Hall Rotunda as a venue, but must arrange the qualified officiant separately. A venue booking and a marriage licence do not automatically include a person authorized to conduct the ceremony.

How do I get the marriage certificate afterwards?

Once the marriage has been registered after the ceremony, order the certificate through ServiceOntario. The certificate is a different document from the licence issued before marriage. Use the city’s linked provincial service rather than asking Barrie to convert the licence into a certificate.
