Permit coverage, cost and expiry

What does a waterfront permit cover?

It permits free parking in the waterfront areas specified by the city. It is linked to a licence plate and must already be active when you park. Marina and hybrid lots use different permits. Always check the sign and the city’s current waterfront parking map.

What does the resident permit cost and when does it expire?

Eligible Barrie residents pay nothing. Resident waterfront permits issued between 2022 and 2028 were extended automatically to December 31, 2028. The city says no action is needed for that extension. You do not need to purchase a HotSpot membership to obtain the free permit.

What is the non-resident option?

A non-resident waterfront permit costs $150 plus HST and is valid for one calendar year. A permit bought in 2026 expires December 31, 2026. Without a permit, ordinary waterfront rates are $15 an hour, capped at $60 daily in applicable paid areas.

Documents, applications and approval

What documents does a resident application need?

Supply each vehicle’s ownership document showing the owner name, licence plate and address, plus proof of Barrie address. Examples include a driver’s licence, a current-year tax bill or a utility, water or cell-phone bill from within the previous 60 days.

How do I apply through HotSpot?

Create or sign into a HotSpot account, confirm your email and add the vehicles. Choose Permits, then the special or residential permit application. Select Barrie and Resident Waterfront, upload clear documents and submit. Choose Permits as your main use to avoid buying a parking membership accidentally.

How long does approval take?

The city gives a usual review period of three to five business days. An email confirms approval or explains rejection. The permit appears under My Permits once active. Do not assume the application-submitted email is approval to park without paying.

Several vehicles and special situations

Can I register more than two vehicles?

Yes. There is no overall resident cap for eligible vehicles. Each application allows up to two plates. Wait for that application’s approval before submitting the next vehicles. Each vehicle needs its own approval and the correct plate entry.

What if I use a company car or rental car?

A company car application needs ownership proof, your residency proof and evidence linking you to the company, such as a work letter or pay stub. Rental cars require an in-person Service Barrie application with residency proof and rental agreement; the permit ends with the rental agreement.

Who does not qualify for a free resident permit?

Examples include visitors, people who only work in Barrie, short-term rental occupants with non-Barrie vehicle addresses, and a non-resident caregiver’s vehicle. Large vehicles that do not fit a single stall are excluded. Property or business ownership can have separate evidence rules, so ask Service Barrie about your case.

Can I apply without a smartphone or change a rejected application?

Use the HotSpot website or ask Service Barrie at 705-726-4242 for in-person assistance. A rejected application email explains the missing or unclear evidence; resubmit with corrected documents. Review your plate number carefully, because a typo can leave the vehicle without a usable permit.
