Ownership, location and meter readings
Who owns and maintains the meter and shut-off valve?
The city installs and maintains its water meters. The internal shut-off valve belongs to the homeowner, although the city can repair or replace it for a fee. Keep the meter and valve accessible for maintenance and for use during an emergency leak.
Where is the internal shut-off valve normally located?
It is generally in the basement or crawl space, often near the water heater, furnace or water softener. Homes may have a ball valve or gate valve. Locate your own valve before a repair is needed instead of assuming every house uses the same layout.
How does the city read my meter?
A SmartPoint device, usually mounted outside, transmits the meter reading remotely to Water Billing. The counting mechanism runs only when water passes through the meter. The city tag must remain attached and the city-owned meter must remain accessible.
Order and pay for a residential package
Can I ask for the SmartPoint device to be moved?
Yes. The page says moving the SmartPoint device is free. Ask Water Operations at 705-792-7920 or WaterOperations@barrie.ca. This is a request to move the reading device, not permission to relocate or alter the water meter yourself.
Which projects use a residential meter package?
The standard residential packages apply to 5/8-by-3/4-inch or 25-millimetre meters for a house or duplex. Projects with four or more residential units, commercial buildings or meters of 38 millimetres and larger should contact Water Operations about the appropriate process.
How do I request a package or meter wire?
Email WaterMetering@barrie.ca with company name, contact person, phone number, quantity, building permit numbers and payment choice. Meter wire is supplied in 1,000-foot boxes. State whether you want to pay online or at the Surface Water Treatment Plant.
Pickup, installation and inspection
What package prices does the city currently list?
The page lists $705.90 for a 16-by-19-millimetre package, $1,116.15 for a 25-millimetre package and $258.95 for a 1,000-foot wire box. The city warns these component costs fluctuate, so confirm the current amount before paying.
Where can I pay in person?
The Surface Water Treatment Plant at 20 Royal Parkside Drive accepts Visa, Mastercard, debit, cheque and cash, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Online package payments accept Visa and Mastercard. Allow up to 48 hours to receive the online payment email.
When can I collect the package?
Water Operations sends pickup instructions after payment and preparation. The page says orders of up to two packages can be picked up immediately after payment is received. Larger orders should follow the specific readiness message instead of assuming immediate pickup.
How do I arrange the inspection and water turn-on?
Complete the city’s installation checklist, then email Water.Operations@barrie.ca or call 705-792-7920 with the civic address. Give at least two business days’ notice. Your building permit may also require a separate Exterior Water Service inspection through APLI before turn-on.
